A new patent application has revealed Samsung is working on something big and might soon have a smartphone with a foldable display. The patent application was filed earlier in June but published by the US Patent & Trademark Office just last month.
This isn’t the first time Samsung has been in the news in relation to a foldable display, the company has filed several patents suggesting this in the past.
First spotted by Patently Mobile, the new patent application details a smartphone with foldable display, supported by a pair of hinges which will bend a single display unit into two halves when closed.
The new display concept comes with certain features which include the integration of hologram and projector components. This key features makes the patent application a lot more interesting than usual.
The new device may be able to project 3D stereographic images into the air using the interference of light and the projector may project images onto a screen located inside or outside the device. The patent application reveals two separate devices with foldable displays supported by a pair of hinges: A bulkier one and a much thinner one.
The illustration details how the device is going to work. It’s likely to feature interactive icons found on display edge of Samsung Galaxy 6 Edge when this new device is closed.
As interesting as this looks, there is no guarantee we’re going to see this device anytime soon or ever. It is a patent application and for now, it’s more or less just an idea. We’re not sure when the technology will be available in consumer products. But then, no one knows what the South Korean giant has up it sleeves; the new array of crazy products to be unveiled at CES only shows this might happen just about any time.
