One of the first problems I encountered on Windows 8 was the blue screen of death (BSOD) I got while trying to connect to the internet using my unlocked Huawei modem. I was able to install the driver successfully and the dashboard icon displayed right on the desktop but each time I tried to connect to the internet, I kept getting this annoying blue screen with some BAD_POOL_CALLER error showing on the screen. The problem actually has to do with the modem driver. At the moment, the drivers available for most models of  Huawei USB modems are not compatible with Windows 8. A guy I personally know got a USB modem from the UK and the modem was locked to 3, a UK mobile network. On getting to Nigeria here, he found out the modem wouldn't work with SIM card. The modem prompted for an unlock code and this dude kept guessing till he entered it incorrectly ten times. He rendered the modem useless and even DC unlocker couldn't unlock it. I tried all I could but it didn't work. I decided to try flashing the modem and re-installed the firmware but still, the unlock counter still read 10. Unlocking your USB modem removes all restrictions and gives you the chance to use other network operator SIM cards. My post on unlocking Huawei USB modems still works but this post explains how to unlock ZTE USB Modems easily. I tried looking for a free online tool to unlock ZTE Modems like the one for Huawei found here but couldn't find one that's reliable. Most service providers sell customized huawei modems which they've already programmed to work only on their network. You might get a prompt to enter an unlock code if you try to use a sim from another service provider on these USB modems.
