Wordpress definitely has advantage over other platforms like its seo benefits over other bloging platforms like blogger though it is not free.
As far as themes are concerned- the best themes are paid not free which also ads to a disadvantage.
Still the widget addition system of wordpress is brilliant along with the capability to choosse different column style for different posts – say sidebar on right for post 1 and then sidebar on left for post2.
