I wrote earlier on unlocking ZTE and Huawei modems on this post and it works quite well but lots of comments made me re-write the post with more details. I’ve used DC unlocker with lots of ZTE modems including MF110, MF190, MF180, MF673u and more. Unlike Huawei modems that can be easily unlocked by generating the unlock code using the IMEI, there are certain steps to take to unlock a ZTE USB modem with DC Unlocker. If your model number is not listed, you can still try it anyway.
You’ll need DC unlocker to get this done and you may download here.
How to Unlock ZTE Modems
- Insert an alien SIM into the modem, I mean an unsupported SIM from a different network
- Plug in your USB modem to the computer and start the default modem software. What I mean by the default program is the program from which you connect the modem to your home network.
- When you’re prompted for an unlock code, close the program but be sure the modem remains plugged in.
- Disconnect all internet connections and run DC Unlocker
- Click on server and input doncaprio as username and password.
- Under Select Manufacturer, choose ZTE datacards
- Under Select models, just leave it at Auto detect as shown above.
- Click on the magnifying glass to search for your modem.
- When your datacard is detected, click on unlock. Your modem should be unlocked after some seconds.
As you can see in the image above, that screenshot was taken when I was unlocking a friend’s ZTE MF190 from Airtel. It was successfully unlocked without any errors.
What you should do after unlocking your modem.
OK, you’ve unlocked your mode, now and it now accepts SIM cards from different network providers but that’s not the end of it. Without creating data profiles for these networks, you probably won’t be able to use the modem on other networks.
Based on the provider you use and what the default program user interface looks like, you must locate where to create a new configuration profile. For me, it’s just under Tools > Options > Profile Management
You must create a new settings for each provider you intend to use. You only need the Access Point Name (APN), Username and Password. You’re to select static APN and use *99# as access number in most cases.

- Access Point Name (APN): gloflat

- Username: leave blank
- Password: leave blank
These are for some of the major Nigerian networks. You should try to find out the configuration settings that works with all your networks to get the most out of the unlocked ZTE modem.

I have a problem with my ZTE MF190 usb modem, I bught it from a X company, it works perfect with their chip and connection software. But when I use a diferent chip, or software, it is OK for two and a half minutes and then it disconects from the network, the red ligth turns on.
When I run the DCCRAP it says:

It seems like the modem looks for a specific connection manager, if it is not found, it disconeccts. For example, I use the usb modem with its original sim card, but with an other connection software, and it works for two and a half minutes, then it turns red and disconnects.

Thanks for the compliment, Beto. I had similar problem with mine. The case may be different but you can still try what I did that fixed mine. Go to Options and locate network settings. Instead of WCDMA preferred, you may select WCDMA only.

I tried what you recommend me. It does not work for me, the propietary connection software of the modem’s company does not allow to work with another SIM card, it pops up a window that say that it only work with the specific provider’s SIM card. And when I use a different software, I can surf with any SIM card, the original or others, but only for two and a half minutes, then the led turns red and lost the connection.
I am stuck here, I don’t know what else to do.

Perhaps flashing the modem should fix that but to be honest, I’ve never flashed a modem before.

If you’ve entered the unlock code incorrectly 10 times, it may be permanently locked.

Unlocking a SIM locked modem is a certain way of using one particular modem on several networks both within and outside your country. So simply saying, unlocking a modem will make it universal and eliminate any sort of restrictions on it. Thanks for the post.

If you were connected to the internet, it probably won’t work I suggest you delete that dc-unlocker you already have, download this and go over the whole process again with internet turned off.

Well, I wasn’t actually trying to unlock it. To unlock it, I had to update its firmware, but without unlocking, the firmware was unable to update. This dc unlocker in Your link was somehow able to unlock my device without updating it’s firmware.

After unlocking my Airtel ZTE modem, I configured it this way: Config Filename: MTN, Dial Number: #99*, I ticked Use the following APN Name and under configuration, I input: web.gprs.mtnnigeria.net.
Then I connected but the connection failed and gave me this error message: “The remote computer did not respond. For further assistance, click More Info or search Help and Support Center for this error number.”

You can try using an unsupported SIM card to see if it’ll work or not.
It does not work…returns me an error code 628..:-(..When I rechecked the status of the modem using your program it shows that the modem is unlocked. I am confused..:-(
When I use the unlocked modem (as I believe) with the new SIM (not from the initial operator) the connection manager starts and the light turns on green. It should mean that the modem is unlocked. However, it does not connect to the internet and returns with the error 628.
For correct ZTE modem detection, please plug modem with invalid operator SIM inserted. Wait till software starts the modem, close ZTE software and then you can detect modem with DC-Unlocker.

I could do it now…The SIM was unlocked from firmware but not dashboard. I downloaded original ZTE dashboard and used the driver from the original modem and dashboard from the ZTE one. And it worked like a champion…:-)
Hello! My challenge is big.
I unlocked a ZTE mf631 for etisalat and could use it with other networks. i then downloaded a dashboard with call features but I mistakenly (maybe not) deleted the native dashboard that came with the modem. Now I cannot even detect the modem using the new dashboard. I did not save the setup file for the native dashboard (oh! Why didnt I?). I use a macbook pro osx 10.7.5

You have to create new configuration profiles for other networks in your settings.

The modem is actually MF190S, not MF190… I can only assume this version of DC Unlocker doesn’t support that model.

Error 62 is likely to be due to customized firmware. I’m not sure I can be of help since I didn’t get such errors. It just worked.
